The microMODUL-251 is a Single Board Computer in matchbox-size (51 x 36 mm) dimensions. The board captures the 8051 performance upgrade of the Intel MCS* 251 microcontroller family, which boosts up to 15x the speed of the 8051 and enhances integrated peripherals while maintaining binary code compatibility to the 8051 family. The board's small footprint allows it to be easily embedded as a "big chip" in user hardware lay-outs.
The Intel 80C251SB controller is the standard on-board CPU. On-chip features supported by the microMODUL-251 include: PAGE-mode, 17-address-mode enhanced memory access, a Programmable Counter Array (PCA), an advanced register-based CPU architecture in support of a 40 byte register file, a 256 KB expanded external CODE/XDATA memory space, 64 Kbyte stack space, an enhanced serial port for multi-processor communication and a Watchdog Timer. All controller signals and ports are extended from the controller to the pin rows aligning three edges of the board, including 32 I/O pins.
The standard board runs at 16 MHz clock speed and features 128 KB SRAM and 128 (up to 512) KB Flash for storage of user code. External communication, memory mapping and downloading of user programs are enabled by means of an RS-232 transceiver (optionally configurable as RS-485 or TTL). Three free Chip-Select signals are available for external I/O switches. The microMODUL-251 operates within a standard industrial temperature range of 0 to 70 degrees C (with an extended range from -40 to 85 degrees C) and requires a low 5 V/ca 80 mA power source. The board is easily programmed with standard software development tools supporting MCS 251 architecture. With help of the included PHYTEC's Flash utilities firmware, user code (in Intel hex-file format) is easily downloaded to the Flash via an RS-232 connection to a host PC.
